Awa, also known as Kava or Kava Kava is one of the plants brought to Hawaii years ago. Awa (Piper methysticum, pronounced ah-vah with the “w” as a “v” sound), a member of the pepper family, once grown heavily in the wild is now cultivated throughout the Pacific Islands. This specific variety is called “Nene” or Hawaiian goose. The stall of the plant is light green with dark green dots near the knuckle of the stalk as shown the the picture above.
