Kaluaikoolau, also known as “Koolau”, lived in Waimea, Kauai in the late 1800’s. When he learned that he contracted leprosy, the Provisional Government attempted to force him into the quarantine colony at Kalaupapa on Molokai. Koolau refused, he was hunted down by Provisional Government sheriffs whom he eventually shot and killed while residing in Kalalau Valley on Kauai’s north shore. He eventually died while residing in the valley, but his wife, Piilani, lived to tell the story. This papale is a tribute to one of Waimea, Kauai’s own rebel sons. “Koolau Ki Pololei” (“Koolau the Sharp Shooter”)
